Members of Congress Spend $3.7 Million a Day…On Themselves

Over one recent six-month period, the members of the U.S. House of Representatives spent more than $670 million on staff salaries, travel, supplies and contracting out for services—an average of $3.7 million a day for expenditures. Using data collected from the House Clerk’s Office, the Sunlight Foundation Reporting Group also discovered that House committees and offices spent $60 million on purchases in just one month, including $12 million for computers and related equipment. The biggest individual spenders were Representatives Tom McClintock (R-California), with $893,000, Daniel Lipinski (D- Illinois), with $870,820 and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California), with $858,000.
The corporations that benefitted most from House spending in this period were CDW Government Inc. at $8,102,342, Pitney Bowes at $7,773,558, Citibank $7,582,694, and Cisco Systems $7,438,381.
