Obama Orders Agencies to Stop Paying Dead People
Monday, June 21, 2010
No more checks for these Americans
Seeking ways to cut wasteful spending, President Barack Obama has ordered the Department of the Treasury, the Office of Management and Budget and the General Services Administration to create a database for federal agencies to use in order to stop sending checks to dead people, delinquent or jailed contractors and others banned from doing business with the U.S. government. Payments to dead people alone over the past three years totaled $182 million.
The administration also has ordered the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to use an online fraud-detection program so federal workers don’t repeat their mistakes from fiscal year 2009, when $65 billion in erroneous payments were sent out.
