Obama Top Recipient of AIG Campaign Contributions
Tuesday, March 31, 2009
For all the talk about the need to prop up insurance giant AIG because of its place in the financial industry, it is important to note that many in Washington backing the company’s bailout have received generous contributions from the beleaguered enterprise. Number one on AIG’s giving list is none other than President Barack Obama, who collected more than $100,000 during the 2008 election cycle. The other six-figure beneficiary of AIG is Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT), chairman of the Senate banking committee, who is now facing a heated re-election challenge in 2010 following revelations about the $165 million in bonuses for AIG executives from the taxpayer bailout.
Although Democrats were the biggest feeders, Republicans weren’t entirely shut out of the AIG trough. GOP presidential nominee John McCain pulled in $59,499 (good enough for third place, ahead of Hillary Clinton, who received only $37,965), while Mitt Romney got $20,850 and John Sununu $18,500.
