Daily Beast Gives Republicans 32-26 Sex Scandal Lead over Democrats
Thursday, April 01, 2010
While serving his third term as mayor of Waterbury, Connecticut, Republican Philip Giordano was arrested for having sex with girls aged 8 and 10. He is currently serving a 37-year term in prison.
After reviewing 58 sex scandals over the past two decades involving politicians or major candidates for federal, state and local office, The Daily Beast has determined that Republicans have had more embarrassing escapades than Democrats. But what Democrats lack in quantity they make up for in the quality of their sexual dalliances.
The Daily Beast gives the GOP the overall numerical edge, 32-26. Democrats, however, have had more jaw-dropping scandals:
- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom admitting an affair with his campaign manager’s wife, killing his chances of running for California governor;
- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s extramarital tryst that injured him as well for the gubernatorial nomination;
- Former New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer getting busted for sleeping with prostitutes, derailing his gubernatorial and perhaps even presidential aspirations;
- Presidential contender John Edwards cheating on his cancer-stricken wife, destroying his White House dreams;
- And Bill Clinton.
Other conclusions reached by The Daily Beast include the Democrats’ tendency to have “more problems with harassment, staffers and underage girls” while “Republicans tend to have more problems with prostitutes, hypocrisy and underage boys.”
Republicans led 6-1 in the Prostitution category, 16-9 in Hypocrisy and 5-2 in Coverup. Democrats, on the other hand, took Staffer Abuse 16-5 and Sexual Harassment 8-2. The two parties may differ when it comes to policy, but there is one subject where they are perfectly in tune: Adultery. The Daily Beast score: Democrats-18; Republicans-18.
