Would You Recognize Osama bin Laden if You Saw Him?

Saturday, January 16, 2010

In case you happen to be wandering down the street, pass a tall, 50-something Middle Eastern gentleman sporting a long gray beard, and wonder, “Was that?….” the FBI has released age-enhanced photographs of Osama bin Laden to help the public recognize the still-most-wanted terrorist in the United States. Officials applied sophisticated digital enhancement techniques to existing mug shots of bin Laden, producing two different possible looks for the godfather of al-Qaeda.

One version shows him with his trademark long beard, only now it has a lot of gray whiskers. The second photo representation, in case bin Laden has gone for a whole new look, shows him without a turban, sporting wavy gray and black hair, and a trim beard.

The U.S. government says it’s been more than eight years since it received a confirmed sighting of bin Laden. The reward for information on his whereabouts stands at $25 million.

They used cut & paste from a snapshot of someone that looked like think Bin Laden looks. They got the photo from google. But from the wrong person: They used a snapshot of Spanish politician called Gaspar Llamazares. Just search "osama bin llamazares" in google news. If those guys from the FBI are the responsible of our safety, well, I'm starting feel scared..

The sophisticated digital enhancement techniques seem to be photoshop and google. The FBI has already pulled from its website the picture shown after it was denounced by a spanish newspaper: http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2010/01/16/internacional/1263598044.html with google translate (dificult to understand): http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.elmundo.es%2Felmundo%2F2010%2F01%2F16%2Finternacional%2F1263598044.html&sl=es&tl=en
