The collateral damage from the phone-hacking scandal in the United Kingdom that is enveloping Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. keeps piling up. Here is a sampling of the numerical highlights produced so far:
4,000: Estimated number of phone hacking victims.
$161,130: Amount of money allegedly paid in bribes to Scotland Yard officers by News of the World employees.
16: Percentage chance that Rupert Murdoch steps down as News Corp CEO by the end of the year.
11: Number of people arrested so far. (10, if you don’t count Glenn Mulcaire, the private investigator disavowed by Rupert Murdoch at Tuesday’s hearings before Parliament who was sentenced to six months jail time in 2007 for hacking into royals’ office voicemail.)
10: Number of people on Scotland Yard’s press team who used to work for News International (out of a total 45 staffers).
7: Number of people who have resigned over the scandal, including four top News International executives and two Scotland Yard officers.
5.5: Percentage rise in News Corp.’s stock price on Tuesday, the day Murdoch and son James testified before Parliament. That’s still 12.4% below its 30-day high.
1: Number of Murdoch sons who have admitted to misleading Parliament.
1: Number of News of the World whistleblowers found dead (Sean Hoare, the first journalist who talked; he was found dead in his home on Monday).
0: Number of on-air Fox News personalities who have expressed outrage over News Corps. corporate behavior in the hacking scandal.
