Throw a stone anywhere around Capitol Hill and not only are you likely to hit a lobbyist, but one working on health care. There are reportedly 3,300 lobbyists currently in Washington, DC, working the issue of medical reform—that’s a six-to-one ratio of lobbyist to lawmaker in Congress. They are by far the largest group of lobbyists in the nation’s capital, with three times as many of them as those representing military interests. Doctors and other health professionals, hospitals, patient advocates, drug manufacturers and insurance companies are just some of the more than 1,500 organizations who have hired health-care lobbyists, including those employed by the 10 biggest lobbying firms in DC. So far this lobby has spent $263.4 million in the first six months of 2009, compared with the $241.4 million allocated during the same period last year.
