Bush-Appointed U.S. Attorneys Cling to Office

Matt Dummermuth
One third of all U.S. Attorneys currently in office were appointed by President George W. Bush, demonstrating that President Barack Obama is moving far slower than his predecessor in making over the composition of federal prosecutors. An analysis of federal records by the website Main Justice found there are 31 U.S. Attorneys, out of a total of 93 posts, still in office who were appointed by Bush. Comparatively, the Bush administration, after nine months in office, had cleaned out all but eight appointees by President Bill Clinton.
Among the more controversial Bush holdovers is Matt Dummermuth, who was appointed, at the age of 33, to the Northern District of Iowa without being confirmed by the Senate, using a seen-rescinded provision of the Patriot Act.
