Anti-Arizona Cities Issue IDs to Illegal Immigrants
Tuesday, May 18, 2010
Unlike the state of Arizona, which is trying to crackdown on illegal immigration by requiring anyone stopped by police to show proof of legal status, some cities on the East and West Coast are dispensing IDs to help undocumented individuals become part of their local communities.
Three cities in New Jersey—New Haven, Trenton and Princeton—have adopted ordinances allowing local groups to issue ID cards to illegal immigrants, which helps them gain access to services. Other communities in the state may do the same. Meanwhile, in California, San Francisco already has a program in which city officials dispense IDs to the undocumented population, and Oakland is in the process of doing something similar.
