TV Depictions of Violence against Women Skyrocket
Saturday, October 31, 2009
Television programs are increasingly portraying women as victims of violence, according to a new study by the conservative Parents Television Council. The research shows violence in general on TV increased only 2% from 2004 to 2009, but incidents of violence against women leaped 120% during the same period. Other findings include:
Every network except ABC demonstrated a significant increase in the number of storylines that included violence against women;
There was a 400% increase in the depiction of teen girls as victims across all networks;
According to the Parents Television Council, Fox was particularly guilty of trivializing violence against women by using such portrayals as punch lines in comedies, especially on the shows Family Guy and American Dad.
