California Judge Allows Student Artists to Decorate Courthouse
When the new 4th District Court of Appeal building was completed in Santa Ana, California, Justice Eileen Moore was given the task of acquiring art for the courthouse. The problem was that she was not given a budget to do so. She tried getting artists to donate their work, but potential conflicts of interest with high-profile donors made that option unworkable. Moore then organized a court-sponsored art contest, which received only three entries.
Instead of giving up, Moore got the Orange County Department of Education to create a new program where students would create art based on local legal cases. The program was successful, and the new courthouse now features several large murals. The largest depicts Westminster vs. Mendez, the 1947 ruling that ended segregation in schools for Mexican children.
