Hawaii Legislators Propose Novel Revenue Source: Sell Copies of Obama’s Birth Certificate
Monday, January 31, 2011

Looking for a way to raise revenues for a cash-strapped state budget, lawmakers in Hawaii are considering charging anyone requesting a copy of President Barack Obama’s birth certificate.
Under legislation introduced in the state House of Representatives, obtaining a copy of Obama’s birth certificate would cost $100.
Since his election as president in 2008, a vocal collection of opponents have claimed Obama was not born in Hawaii, and thus is not a citizen by birth, a key requirement to hold the office.
“If the people are so concerned about Barack Obama and if he was actually born in Hawaii, born in the United States, let them pay a fee of 100 bucks,” Democratic Representative John Mizuno told the media. “We can certainly use the money, and we don’t need to hear their complaining anymore.”
By charging so-called “birthers” and others seeking proof that Obama was born in the U.S., legislators are hoping to help close an $800 million deficit facing the state.
