Indian Politician Addresses Wrong Rally

VS Acharya

VS Acharya, a minister in the Indian state of Karnataka and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was driving through his district last Sunday when he noticed a political rally being held. Like any good politician, Acharya saw an opportunity to address a crowd, so he stopped his car. He proceeded to join the procession of speakers in attendance. However, unlike the others, Acharya used his time to praise his party’s job of running the Karnataka state government, and lambaste the Congress party, which controls the national government of India. Eventually, Acharya noticed that the more he skewered the Congress party, the more his audience became restless…and then it dawned on him: wrong crowd. Realizing he was addressing Congress supporters, Archarya promptly dashed to his car and sped off. He later said he was just paying a “courtesy visit.”

Acharya wasn’t the only BJP member to recently commit a political gaffe. Assam’s BJP leader, Uma Bharati, railed against the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) law, claiming if necessary, she’d go on a road march to drum up support for the law’s repeal. Journalists then informed Bharati that the law was done away with in July 2005.
