“Democratized intelligence” is helping uncover the secretive world of North Korea, one of the world’s most hidden societies, thanks to economist Curtis Melvin. Through his blog, North Korean Economy Watch, Melvin has used the power of Google Earth and loads of tips from others to compile a citizens’ registry of important locations in North Korea. The listings range from the strategic (rocket-launch sites) to the political (prison camps) to the mere touristy (restaurants).
Melvin claims to have mapped much of the country’s transportation network and electrical grid, along with the grand estates of President Kim Jong-II and other North Korean leaders. He even believes he’s found mass graves from the mid-1990s famine that killed an estimated two million North Koreans.
