One Penny Mistake Keeps Florida Candidate from Qualifying for Ballot
Monday, June 21, 2010

Republican Neil Combee, a former county commissioner, really wanted to run for the Florida Legislature and challenge Kelli Stargel, the GOP incumbent in the District 64 House seat. But last Friday, when the deadline passed for getting on the primary ballot, Combee discovered elections officials had disqualified him from the race because his filing fee was one penny short of the required amount. Instead of paying the requisite $1,781.82, Combee’s campaign treasurer made out the check for $1,781.81.
Combee said he called the elections office on Friday to make sure everything was okay with his paperwork. But he couldn’t get an answer and was told to “watch the Internet” later that day for news. “I had my cell phone on all day and it could have been easily taken care of, but maybe they were happy to run out the time,” Combee told the Lakeland Ledger.
He plans to appeal his disqualification this week.
