Waitress Fired for Posting Note from Pastor who Refused to Leave Tip

An Applebee’s waitress in St. Louis has been fired for posting a copy of a receipt online that showed the customer—a local pastor—refused to leave a tip while referencing God.

“I Give God 10% Why do you Get 18?” read the note on the receipt from Alois Bell, who was charged an automatic 18% tip because she was with a large group at the restaurant, five adults and five children following services at the Word Deliverance Ministries church.

Thinking the note was both funny and insulting, waitress Chelsea Welch took a photo of the receipt and posted it on Reddit. Welch was not even the waitress for Bell. Another waitress showed Welch the note, which prompted her to share it on the Internet.

Once Bell learned of the posting, she complained to the restaurant’s management, demanding everyone (literally) be fired. Applebee’s complied, releasing a statement that “Our Guests’ personal information – including their meal check – is private, and neither Applebee’s nor its franchisees have a right to share this information publicly. We value our Guests’ trust above all else. Our franchisee has apologized to the Guest and has taken disciplinary action with the Team Member for violating their Guest’s right to privacy. This individual is no longer employed by the franchisee.”

Welch was in fact fired from her $3.50/an hour position.

“I am expected to portray a canned personality that has been found to be least offensive to the greatest amount of people,” Bell told Consumerist. “I come home exhausted, sore, burnt, dirty, and blistered on a good day. And after all that, I can be fired for ‘embarrassing’ someone who directly insults their server on religious grounds.”
