Blog Awards Announced…in Cuba
Saturday, September 12, 2009
The times they are a-changing, in Cuba, where a collection of cyber aficionados came together to celebrate the Communist country’s first-ever blog awards. As Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez put it, A Virtual Island was more than just a ceremony—it was a watershed event for a society that is finally coming out from under the grip of an authoritarian government. “It means to get the information, to break the monopoly of the official media over the news, to let out what we have been silent about for years, while we go through an accelerated course in citizenship in cyberspace,” wrote Sanchez.
The big winner on the night was Claudia Cadelo for her blog, Octavo Cerco, recipient of the awards for best blog and most popular. Best blog design went to Boring Home Utopics, by Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo, who also took home the prize for best photo blog.
“Best Journalistic Blog” was shared by Miriam Celaya for Sin Evasion and a group of independent journalists responsible for the Association for Freedom of the Press.
