Most Americans Don't Know Their Taxes Were Cut
Wednesday, February 17, 2010
No wonder so many Americans are fed up with Washington and losing faith in President Barack Obama’s domestic policies. Despite numerous reminders in President Obama’s speeches that he and his fellow Democrats did cut taxes during his first year in office, the vast majority of respondents to a CBS News/New York Times poll say they didn’t know such breaks had been passed.
Only 12% of those surveyed said tax cuts had been implemented, while 24% said they were raised and 53% believed they were kept the same. The responses were even starker among those who identified themselves as members of the Tea Party Movement, with 44% saying taxes went up, 46% saying they remained the same, and 2% saying they went down.
The results would indicate that the tax cuts, which really did happen, were so small that many Americans did not feel their. The average family took home only $70 more a month, and many individual taxpayers experienced a weekly increase of just $13.
